A Dog of a Different Color

I hope you haven't tired of seeing sock dogs, because I have not tired of making them.  This one was for my niece, Lynnsie's 1st birthday.  You may remember that I made her one when she was born, but her big sister claimed him for her own.  Now that Lynnsie is big enough to hold onto it, maybe she'll get to keep this one.

I love the way the spot around his eye turned out and I think the black and white may be my favorite so far.  My brother immediately identified him as a Blue Heeler

Two Little Monkeys, Sitting in a Tree

More Sock and Glove goodies.  The black and gray monkey is for my cousin, who is expecting her first baby (a boy), and has a monkey-themed nursery.  The other is for a friend's little girl, who saw the "boy" monkey at our house and said she had always wanted a sock monkey.  She turned 6 this week, and her mom asked if I would be willing to make her sock-monkey dreams come true.  How could I refuse?

The One With All The Girls

My friend Jeanna (one of my college roommates) had her second daughter a couple of weeks ago.  We're all moms now.  Moms of girls, except for my cousin Elizabeth.  Poor Jack.  He has no idea of the mess he's gotten himself into.  He didn't come today.  Anyway we all got together, to hold the latest girl, and catch up, and do other things.

The sock dog I made for Claire, which I suspect has already been usurped by her Big Sister.

A thing I made for Jeanna to make her cry.

Somehow Ginny manages to find a tutu to wear, no matter where she goes.

Pretty maids, all in a row.

I brought cupcakes, of course.  These are Cherry Almond Teacakes from the Martha book.

Elizabeth had to leave early and I only took one picture of her.  I feel certain she will be less offended at being excluded from this post than she would be if I actually included that one picture.  I'm so nice.

Double Dog Dare

For my sake Made it Monday at The Persimmon Perch may have to be re-named "Missed it Monday," as I have been fashionably late to the past couple of blog-parties.  Better late than never though, right?

So here's what I made.  My grandmother sent me a letter about a month ago and asked me if I would make sock doggies for two distant cousins who are welcoming long prayed-for babies into their families.  It's been years since I have seen either of them, but I was thrilled to be able to make something special for their new additions.  They turned out really cute, I think.  Maybe the cutest I've made yet!

One has ears that want to lay down, and the other's ears want to stand up.  The tags were made using acrylic stamps on scrapbook paper.  As always, my pattern was from Sock and Glove, by Miyako Kanamori

Here in The Hundred Acre Wood

Eeyore's Gloomy Place

Under the name "Sanders"

The Wolery

A sandy pit to practice jumping

I made these for Ginny's Christmas gift, using the Sock and Glove and Happy Gloves patterns, and I am so happy with how they turned out. More importantly, Ginny loves them. I attached Eeyore's tail with a snap, so it can be "lost" and found again by Pooh, and she has played out that scene many times already, hanging the lost tail over the nearest doorknob to show that Owl is using it for a bell-pull. Adorable.

I found this sweet little denim bag at Goodwill and embroidered "Tiddely Pom!" on the front pocket. Ginny loves saying, "Tiddely Pom!" Everyone fits perfectly inside to be taken along wherever she goes.

These CDs have been in steady rotation in Ginny's room for the past 2 months. At nap and and bedtimes, she asks for a specific story and has begun to recite from them regularly. It amazes me what she can remember. We've taken the disks along on car trips, and I have enjoyed listening to them, too.

Return to the Hundred Acre Wood, the first authorized sequel to The House at Pooh Corner was published recently, and I can hardly wait to get a copy to read aloud with Ginny. Penguin Classics has a fantastic group of videos about the history of Pooh and the new book on their website. Watch for a glimpse of the real Pooh, Rabbit, and all of Christopher Robin's friends. It brought tears to my eyes!

My Old Socks

I've been doing a bit of sewing from Sock and Glove lately. There are (or soon will be) a couple of new babies in our sphere, and I always like to make a little lovey for wee ones. Not bad for a pile of old socks:

I made this sleepy elephant for my pink-bow-loving friend Ellen's pretty little Audrey. Don't ask me why I posed her in a teacup. It just seemed like the thing to do.

I started making one of these dogs (the all-brown one) for my soon-to-be-born second niece, and Ginny simply fell in love with him. She even named him- McKenzie Doggie. So I made her one of her own. As if she needed another stuffed creature to add to menagerie in her bed. The second one came together much quicker, and she seems very fond of him. I think they have sort of boxer-ish faces. Not exactly like the one in the book, but definitely cute in their way. I hope they will all be much loved and worn out by their owners.

Catching Up

I haven't been in a very "bloggy" mood of late. I haven't been doing much crafting, with the exception of this Pup and his cozy sweater. Pup was fashioned from a pair of gloves and the sweater is made from one of my old holey socks. His sleeves are a little long, but can be rolled up should the need arise. I also made the topiary- but not recently. Two styrofoam balls, a bag of dyed Spanish moss, some floral foam to go in the pot, a stick from the yard, hot glue, and not a few burnt fingers. I did not make the cat.

Just after New Year's I got on a sort of labeling kick. I cleaned out, reorganized and labeled my kitchen cupboards, and attempted to bring some order to my sadly under-shelved craft closet. I considered buying a fancy labeler, but in the end I used a Sharpie and a pack each of nametag stickers (not the "HELLO My Name Is... ones) and those tiny ones you'd use to price things for a yard sale. They worked great for relabeling the jars in my spice rack. I also made use of the fairly large collection of jars I've accumulated. I never throw a glass jar away anymore, if only because I enjoy the look of pantry staples in jars instead of cardboard boxes.

I love those little clementine crates. I don't think I've ever thrown one away, and I never have any trouble finding things to fill them with when all the clementines have been eaten (roughly 24 hours after they enter the house).

Finally, following my post proclaiming my love of paint chips, my super cool interior-designer-cousin, Sarah, sent me my very own paint deck! I will spare you the details of how unnaturally excited I was to receive such a gift. It will suffice to say that I have been wandering around color-matching everything in the entire house. Just look at those colors!
